Little Rock Nine member passes away over the weekend

People all across the state of Arkansas are mourning the loss of one of the members of the Little Rock Nine.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — People all across the state of Arkansas are mourning the loss of one of their own.

According to reports, Thelma Mothershed, one of the members of the Little Rock Nine, passed away over the weekend.

In 1957, the nine students: Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, Jefferson Thomas, Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls LaNier, Minnijean Brown Trickey, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Thelma Mothershed, and Melba Pattillo Beals walked through the front doors of Central High School— though not without a fight.

This year marked the 67th anniversary of the desegregation of Central High School when the Little Rock Nine were finally able to walk through the doors for the very first time.

She was born on November 29, 1940. At 83 years old, she was the eldest of the surviving members of the group. Until now, all members but Thomas, who died in 2010 were still alive.

In response to the news of her passing, the Little Rock School District released the following statement:

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Little Rock Nine member Mrs. Thelma Mothershed-Wair. On behalf of the entire Little Rock School District (LRSD) and its Board of Directors, the District extends its sincerest condolences to her family as well as her Little Rock Nine family members. The District is committed to honoring Mrs. Wair’s legacy by continuing to promote the ideals for which she stood – equity, inclusion, and opportunity for all. Her memory reminds us that education remains a powerful tool in shaping and sharing a more just world. We are grateful for her lasting impact and will forever cherish her legacy."

Mayor Frank Scott Jr. shared that while people mourn her loss, we also pay tribute to her long-lasting legacy.

"[Her legacy is] seen in generations of Americans empowered by her courage and perseverance. She and fellow members of the Little Rock 9 set us on a better path that altered the course of history in our City and nation forever. As a successful educator, author, and advocate, she lived a life we lift up today upon her passing. Our prayers and support are with her loved ones at this difficult time," he added.

Mothershed is remembered for being a true American hero, who alongside the other members helped to change the educational landscape in our country.
