PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. — An 11-year-old boy was shot and killed inside his home in Paulding County Monday night, according to sheriff's deputies.
The Paulding County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to the shooting at the home on Ruth Way at 11 p.m. Investigators believe multiple shots were fired at the home, and 11-year-old Zander Whatley was hit by a bullet while inside.
"That’s the bullet that came through the glass and through the two sheet rocks and got him," William Dorsey, Zander's stepdad, said, pointing to one of the bullet holes in the side of their home.
He said they heard someone banging on the door Monday night.
"And next thing you know, we heard gunshots rang out. So we all took off, took cover," Dorsey said.
He said Zander was shot in the side while he was running up the steps.
"How I look at it is, the way the bullet came through that glass and all of the sheetrock, and with him coming through the stairs that time, that was just an act of God," said Dorsey, saying he finds some peace in knowing Zander is in Heaven. "It was just really nothing that could have been done. He was trying to get out the way, but unfortunately, he wasn't able."
Zander was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, according to the sheriff's office.
"Missing him, him being around, you know, that's the part that really hurts," said Dorsey, who said Zander's birthday was coming up on May 11.
Dorsey said Zander has 11 siblings, saying the 11-year-old enjoyed being a brother and helping his siblings. He added that "there's a lot of love" in the home.
"He is full of love. He was a bright light in the room. He was a very special kid," said Dorsey. "He loved the Lord. He loved to sing. He was a perfect kid."
At this time, there is no word on what led up to the shooting or if there is a suspect in connection with the shooting.
"We hope that they catch the guy," said Dorsey, shaking his head. "And that justice will be served."
Zander attended Hal Hutchens Elementary School. Dorsey said he was part of student council. Principal Priscilla Smith sent a letter to families stating, "It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news of the passing of one of our students, Zander Whatley."
In the letter, Smith said counselors are available for students and staff who need to seek support.
"I would like to offer my deepest condolences to family and friends during this unimaginably painful time. We are here to offer our support and stand together as a school community to provide comfort and strength during their grieving process," the principal added in the letter. "Together, we will honor the memory of Zander and ensure that our students receive the support they need."
The community has also set up a meal train to help Zander's family during this difficult time.
Meanwhile, the Paulding County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are still investigating the circumstances surrounding Zander's death.
