Assistant fire chief in Georgia killed by falling tree while working during Helene

The Pierce County Fire Department says the firefighter was killed when a tree fell on his vehicle.

BLACKSHEAR, Ga. — A part time assistant fire chief in Blackshear, Georgia was killed when a tree fell on his vehicle during Tropical Storm Helene Friday morning, officials confirmed. 

Vernon "Leon" Davis had been a firefighter for over 30 years, Blackshear Police Chief Chris Wright told First Coast News

Officials said Davis died early Friday morning when a tree fell on his truck in Blackshear. Wright told First Coast News Davis had just been clearing up downed trees and power lines before he was killed. 

All of the firefighters who worked with Davis said he was a great man, and they're all trying to cope with the loss, Wright said.
