Caitlyn Jenner to mark 40th anniversary of Olympic win on magazine cover

Caitlyn Jenner will mark the 40th anniversary of the Olympic gold medal she won in the decathlon as Bruce Jenner with a cover story in Sports Illustrated.

The magazine, on newsstands on June 8, also will release a film, Jenner: 40 Years After Gold, on SI.com on June 6, following Jenner as she returns to various stops along her Olympic journey decades ago.

Among others places, she's shown visiting the University of Oregon campus track, where she qualified for her first Olympics in 1972, and San Jose City College, where she trained for the 1976 games, Sports Illustrated said in a statement Wednesday.

“We are excited to bring a fresh perspective to one of the greatest athletic performances of all time,” said Paul Fichtenbaum, Sports Illustrated Group Editor, about the Jenner project.

In conversations and interviews at her Malibu home with senior writer Tim Layden, Jenner offered candid reflections of the games and what it meant to be an Olympic champion, the SI statement said.

"She also spoke openly about the legacy of winning the gold medal and its impact on her journey as a transgender woman in the public eye."

The magazine featured Jenner on the cover in the Aug. 9, 1976, issue after he won the 1976 Olympic gold medal in the decathlon in Montreal.

Much later, he transitioned from Olympic athlete to reality-TV star as the paterfamilias of the Kardashian-Jenner clan on their show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

Jenner took to her Twitter Wednesday to recall it's been one year — #bestyearofmylife — since she made her official debut as a transgender woman on the cover of another another magazine, Vanity Fair, last July.
