LEXINGTON, Ky. — A Kentucky man is getting attention for his diet. It's not what he eats as much as how he eats it, though.
Derek Nance eats raw sheep.
He told CBS affiliate WKYT he started eating uncooked meat when his childhood illnesses became more severe. He had chronic fatigue syndrome and only weighed 150 pounds.
"I started studying other people who were into the raw aspect that the vitamins and nutrients are more intact raw, and it's better and easier for the body to digest," he told the station.
Nance said he goes to local farms to pick out his meals.
"I go out to the farm and try to source local grass-fed, pasture, raised directly from the source because I just need to see for myself where the animals came from," he said. "I think it's important to look at the animal while it's alive and there's a certain vitality and vibrancy in the animal that you can see and you can see for yourself if it's healthy."
He will slaughter the sheep at the farm if the owner will let him; otherwise, he brings it home to kill it.
He isn't breaking local laws by slaughtering animals in his backyard because he has a fence.
His four children like to tell people about his diet, which has brought attention from social services. He doesn't force the kids to eat raw meat and handles the food carefully, so the cases are always dropped, WKYT said.
"I just want to put it out there that it does work for some people," Nance said.
