Polk County man spends $20, wins $5M with Florida Lottery

The man's winnings total more than $3.9 million as a lump sum.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A Winter Haven man is $5 million richer after he bought the winning lottery ticket at a food mart in Haines City, the Florida Lottery said in a news release. 

According to the Lottery, 66-year-old Rickey Johnson of Winter Haven claimed a top prize of the $20 Gold Rush Limited scratch-off game. He reportedly chose to get his winnings as a one-time lump-sum payment of $3.96 million. 

The Lottery said Johnson bought his winning ticket at Haines City Food Mart located at 95 U.S. Highway 17-92 West in Haines City. The food mart will get a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning scratch-off ticket. 

Johnson's winning ticket is one of 32 $5 million top prizes; there are 100 prizes worth $1 million with this specific lottery game, the Lottery said. Another 33,000 tickets that are part of the $20 scratch-off game include prizes ranging from $1,000 to $10,000, the release said. The overall odds of winning any prize while playing the $20 Gold Rush Limited game are reportedly 1 in 2.65.
