The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a highway incident after a YouTube video alleged that a trooper sideswiped a motorcyclist during an attempted traffic stop.
On March 17, Sgt. Spencer Ross was trying to make a traffic stop on a motorcycle rider for running the toll and speeding on State Road 408 in the Orlando area, according to FHP.
During the incident, it appeared that the motorcyclist slowed suddenly, creating a potential traffic hazard while Ross was attempting to exit the travel lanes, FHP said. Based on preliminary review, there appeared to be no attempt to ram or to make contact with the motorcycle, however, this incident is being reviewed by the highway patrol.
FHP policy provides specific guidelines to pursuing motorcycles to ensure public safety, which is why Ross disengaged when the motorcyclist fled from the scene.
Ross was able to obtain a tag number and troopers are still attempting to locate the motorcycle and rider because he faces several traffic charges and fleeing from an officer.
