Day after Helene impacts Tampa Bay area, bridges are slowly reopening

The Courtney Campbell Causeway is still completely closed. The Skyway is open. Other major bridges are partially open.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Florida Department of Transportation said that parts of the Gandy, Howard Frankland and Sunshine Skyway bridges are back open a day after they were shut down ahead of Hurricane Helene.

The westbound lanes of the Gandy Bridge are open, meaning drivers from Tampa and Hillsborough County will be able to get to St. Petersburg and Pinellas County. The eastbound lanes remained closed at this time. Drivers who need to get from Pinellas County to Tampa or Hillsborough County will need to find another route.

The Howard Frankland Bridge's southbound lanes of Interstate 275 are open. This means drivers from Hillsborough County can make it to Pinellas County. However, the northbound Howard Frankland Bridge lanes will remain closed from Pinellas County to Manatee County.

FDOT crews say they are working on clearing debris and assessing damage on the northbound Howard Frankland Bridge before reopening that side of I-275.

Both lanes of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge are open.

The Courtney Campbell Causeway remains closed at this time.
