Tampa Bay-area colleges, universities close for tropical weather

Some campuses and residence halls will also be closed for several days.

TAMPA, Fla. — As Helene continues its track toward Florida, some Tampa Bay-area colleges and universities are canceling classes and closing down campuses. 

USF classes canceled

The University of South Florida announced that all classes will be canceled beginning on Wednesday, Sept. 25, and will not resume until Monday, Sept. 30.

All USF campuses will also be closed from Wednesday through at least Friday, Sept. 27. The plan is to reopen campuses on Saturday if the weather allows.

While USF residence halls at the Tampa and Sarasota-Manatee campuses will remain open, residence halls at the USF St. Petersburg campus will close starting on Wednesday, Sept. 25.

USF St. Pete students in need of a place to stay will be transported to the Tampa campus.

Students are encouraged to follow USF's social media platforms for the latest updates.

Pasco-Hernando State College classes canceled

All Pasco-Hernando State College campuses will be closed on Wednesday, Sept. 25, and Thursday, Sept. 26.

All classes, including on-campus and remote, will also be canceled on these days. Students are asked to contact their instructors for information on specific assignments.

Normal operations are expected to resume on Friday, Sept. 27. Students are asked to monitor the school's website for updates.

Keiser University classes canceled

Keiser University officials announced that the Sarasota, Tampa, Clearwater and New Port Richey campuses are closing at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

St. Leo University classes canceled

The following St. Leo University locations will be closed from Wednesday, Sept. 25m through Friday, Sept. 27:

  • University Campus (33701 County Road 52, St. Leo, FL 33574) — the residential and commuter campus in Pasco County
  • Tampa Education Center (1403 N. Howard Ave., Tampa, FL 33607)
  • Center for Adult Learning (University Campus and Pasco-Hernando State College locations)

Florida State University classes canceled

Outside of the Tampa Bay region, Florida State University's Tallahassee campus is closing at 7 a.m. Wednesday through 11 p.m. Sunday.

Essential operations, including housing, will continue during the closure.
