TAMPA, Fla. – The 18-year-old who shot and killed star Brandon High basketball player Jayquon Johnson in his Valrico garage on New Year’s Day 2017 was sentenced Thursday on five drug charges.
The teen, who was 16 at the time of the shooting, was never charged with murder, but faced weapons charges in connection with the crime, investigators said.
According to investigators, Johnson came to the teen’s Valrico home for a drug deal. An argument broke out, both pulled out weapons, and Johnson was killed.
In a panic, the teen’s mother, Heidi Quinn, buried the weapons in her backyard. She did not call 911. She was later found guilty on charges of tampering with evidence.
A judge decided on Thursday that her son would be sentenced as a youthful offender with adult sanctions. He will have two years of community control and four years of probation. The probation requires 200 hours of community service, curfew, no weapons, school or work full-time and random drug screenings.
He will wait in jail until there is space at a local rehabilitation center.
Johnny Johnson, the father of Jayquon, says he just wants justice served. He also hopes to see changes to the "stand your ground" law. He would like to see the decision to shift the burden of proof on prosecutors instead of the defendant reversed.
