Teen attacks girlfriend, shoots himself

A teen domestic violence situation in New Port Richey has led to a River Ridge High School student clinging to life Monday.
Crisis counselors were on hand Monday at River Ridge High School in New Port Richey to assist anyone who needed it.

New Port Richey, Florida -- A teen domestic violence situation in New Port Richey has led to a River Ridge High School student clinging to life Monday.

Pasco Sheriff's deputies say a 17-year-old boy had a fight with his 16-year-old girlfriend. The boy allegedly battered her, then retrieved a firearm, and tried to shoot her and missed. The boy then drove home and turned the gun on himself.

Crisis counselors were on hand Monday at River Ridge High School in New Port Richey to assist anyone who needed it.

According to the Center for Disease Control, a 2013 nationwide survey 10.3% of high school students said they were physically victimized by a dating partner within 12 months of taking the survey.

Jim Campbell who runs The ROPE/COR Center says there is help available.

"You can call the Salvation Army, you can call the Red Cross, you can call a center like this. There are several centers set up around this community where a child like that can go," said Campbell.
