Tampa teen dies after fireworks 'mortar' round explodes in his hand

TAMPA, Fla. -- A teen died early Friday morning after a firework exploded in his hand.

Joseph King, 16, died just after midnight at Tampa General Hospital.

Tampa police say the explosion happened while he was holding a tube containing a mortar shell-style firework in his left hand late Thursday night in the 4200 block of Osbourne Avenue East.

The blast caused major trauma to his hand and upper left torso.

Police gave him first aid, but officers and doctors couldn't save his life.

The investigation is ongoing.
