ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Summer is almost here and the kids are out of school, so you know what that means — time to suit up for a swim and head to the pool or beach.
And, if your child doesn't know how to swim or needs a refresher, now is the perfect time to get them swimming lessons. Plus, they could even be free.
It's important to make sure your kids know how to swim, especially in Florida. Unfortunately, the Sunshine State leads the nation in the number of unintentional drownings. Children under the age of 4 are most vulnerable, and drowning is one of the leading causes of death among that age group.
Earlier this year, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation to create a new program at the Florida Department of Health. The new law takes effect on July 1, requiring the health department to work with vendors to offer a voucher program for free swimming lessons. The program aims to help low-income families access water safety lessons.
Before the new program is established, there are still plenty of resources to find swim lessons across the Tampa Bay area, some at low or no cost.
