As of early Friday afternoon, more than 136 flights had been delayed. That's approximately 20 percent of all scheduled flights. As of 1 p.m., 24 flights had already been canceled.
The ground stops that TIA announced around 1 p.m. has been lifted as of 2:45 p.m. 176 delays and 67 cancellations are still in place for the airport, however.
According to an airport spokesperson, each airline has its own guidelines on when to halt takeoffs and landings. But, the general rule of thumb is doing so when sustained winds are around 30-35 miles per hour.
The airport offers limited shuttle operations when sustained winds are at 40 mph. But, those shuttles would stop running if winds reached 50 mph.
Five flights were delayed slightly, as of 1 p.m., at the smaller St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport.
