Sarasota deputies arrest high school teacher accused of sex crimes against student

Venice High School teacher Jakob Riddick was arrested Tuesday and is charged with three felonies, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

VENICE, Fla. — A Venice High School biology teacher is in jail for sex crimes against one of his students, authorities said.

Jakob Riddick, 23, was arrested Tuesday on two felony counts of an authority figure soliciting/engaging in sex with a student and one count and an authority figure engaging in a romantic relationship with a student, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

The investigation reportedly began after an administrator with the school district contacted the agency's special victims unit to report an anonymous email received by the Venice High School principal. Deputies said that email detailed messages from a social media chat between Riddick and the student, leading to the teacher's arrest.

In an arrest report, the student told deputies she would secretly meet Riddick at a park 15 minutes from her home and spend time in his car. She admitted they would talk, listen to music and were "sexually active," according to the report.

The student also told deputies she and Riddick were planning to meet over the weekend at Myakka State Park, the report said. These plans were also revealed in the social media chat.

Riddick remains in custody on $75,000 bond per each of the three charges he's facing, the sheriff's office said.
