NORTH PORT, Fla. — North Port Fire Rescue and the North Port Police Department are investigating a crash that left a car in a community pool this week in Wellen Park.

The 54-year-old driver that ended up in the pool was traveling northbound on Mezzo Drive and merging onto eastbound U.S. Highway 41, fire rescue officials said in an email. The driver reportedly failed to yield to another car traveling eastbound in a roundabout before being rear-ended.

Mistaking the gas pedal for the brake pedal, the 54-year-old accelerated at a high speed across the roundabout, breaking through the Oasis gated community and striking two palm trees, a bike rack and a metal fence before coming to a rest at the sundeck of the swimming pool.

No injuries were reported in the crash and the driver of the car that hit the 54-year-old stayed on scene, according to officials.

It is unknown at this time if either driver will be facing any charges.
