NORTH PORT, Fla. — A man and several animals were found dead after a fire moved throughout a home Saturday afternoon, fire officials said.
North Port Fire Rescue responded just after noon to a home in the area of Trenton Lane and Junction Street on a call about an extinguished fire, the agency said in a statement.
While no fire was seen from the outside of the home, firefighters made their way inside and found smoke and soot throughout. It's believed the fire started in the kitchen area before spreading.
The man, two cats and two dogs were dead in a rear bedroom of the home, fire rescue said, adding that there were no working smoke alarms.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
