SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. — Part of southbound Interstate 75 in Sarasota County was shut down for "an extended period" as troopers investigated a deadly crash. The roadway has since reopened.
The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said the crash happened just after 4 a.m. on I-75 near the River Road exit when a person changing their tire walked into the left lane of the road.
The person walked directly into the path of a 21-year-old man driving a Toyota Corolla. Sarasota County emergency medical services pronounced the pedestrian dead on-scene, according to a news release.
For several hours, all southbound traffic on I-75 was diverted at River Road, Exit 191.
Drivers were asked to find an alternate route.
