SARASOTA, Fla. — A Florida Highway Patrol trooper suffered minor injuries after he reportedly rear-ended a pickup truck driver in Sarasota, temporarily shutting down Fruitville Road as a result.

It happened around 6:30 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Fruitville Road and Founders Club Drive, not too far from Interstate 75. According to FHP, the trooper was in his marked FHP cruiser going westbound on Fruitville Road east of Deer Run Drive.

Directly ahead of the trooper, an 18-year-old man from Myakka City was stopped for traffic in his Dodge pickup truck.

According to a report from FHP, the trooper "failed to stop" behind the pickup truck and collided with the rear of the truck.

As a result of the crash, the trooper's cruiser was partially wedged under the back of the pickup truck. The truck was pushed to face northwest and stopped partially on the westbound shoulder and westbound lane.

FHP said the trooper had "minor" injuries and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. The 18-year-old truck driver was not hurt.

Fruitville Road was shut down in both directions for about 45 minutes, FHP said.

The investigation is reportedly ongoing.
