The Salvation Army in Tampa has decided to open its emergency shelter at 11 a.m. on Friday, after a severe storm system was reported to hit the area.

Reports indicate that a band of severe showers and thunderstorms are expected to push across the area during the late morning and early afternoon hours. The Salvation Army will supply shelter and meals to homeless throughout the day.

More than 150 shelter beds will be available early and meals will also be supplied, along with a dry and safe area to stay during the storm.

"We saw the potential weather system and decided we have to make a place for the men, women and children to stay during this possible storm," said Julie Shematz, Director of Social Services.
