WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Six people are needing another place to stay after a fire damaged their home in Winter Haven.
Winter Haven police say a call came in around 5:30 a.m. Friday from a neighbor saying they saw flames coming from the back of a home across the street on 3rd Street NE.
Two officers nearby responded and entered the home, rescuing the people inside. Within minutes, crews with Winter Haven Fire arrived to battle the blaze.
The fire was confined to the back of the home. With help from Polk County Fire Rescue crews, firefighters were able to keep the fire from getting to the front part of the home, meaning that part only suffered smoke damage.
The six people living at the home were displaced; the Red Cross is assisting them.
The fire was put out with the damage kept to the back of the home, including the laundry room and kitchen.
Neither the people living at the home nor the firefighters or police were injured by the fire.
