1 person killed in crash involving dump truck in Winter Haven

Drivers may see delays in the area while authorities investigate and work to clear the crash site.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — One person is dead after a crash between a car and a dump truck in Winter Haven, police said in a news release.

The crash happened just before 5:30 a.m. Thursday on Lucerne Park Road and Old Lucerne Park Road. According to Florida Highway Patrol, a 65-year-old Winter Haven man was driving a Ford Fusion southbound on Old Lucerne Park Road.

At the same time, a 60-year-old Hialeah man driving a dump truck was going westbound on Lucerne Park Road.

At the intersection of the two roads, the 65-year-old man turned left into the path of the dump truck driver. As a result, the dump truck hit the left side of the Ford Fusion.

After the collision, both vehicles rotated and stopped along the south shoulder of the roadway. The Ford also hit a utility pole on the side of the road.

The 65-year-old man died at the crash site. The other driver was not hurt.

Traffic was diverted down Old Lucern Park Road to get around the crash. Drivers saw delays in the area as a result and were encouraged to find alternate routes.

The Florida Highway Patrol has reportedly taken over the investigation and future updates on this crash will come from FHP, police said.
