LAKELAND, Fla. — A Tampa man is now dead after he crashed head-on into a semi-truck Saturday night in Polk County.

Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies said the 36-year-old man was driving a Chevy Silverado around 3 a.m. Saturday southbound on U.S. 98 North. He attempted to pass another southbound car near Earnest Road and went into the northbound lane, "which placed him directly into the path of the semi-truck," according to a news release.

The Tampa man was killed instantly and the driver and passenger of the semi-truck did not get hurt. The road was closed for about five hours as law enforcement cleared the scene.

Deputies said no criminal or civil charges are expected and that the crash is now under investigation.
