2 skydivers injured after 'hard landing' in downtown Lake Wales

The skydivers were among a group of 14 people practicing crew skydiving formations.

LAKE WALES, Fla. — Three skydivers landed “off course” Monday afternoon in downtown Lake Wales, resulting in several injuries.

Lake Wales Police Department officers received a call around 3 p.m. Monday saying three skydivers landed off course between Seminole Avenue and Wiltshire Avenue along Scenic Highway.

Police said one skydiver landed unharmed while two others suffered non-life-threatening injuries after a "hard landing." The two injured were airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Witnesses told police two of the divers’ parachutes were fully opened while the third person’s parachute was partially tangled.

After some investigation, officials learned the skydivers were among a group of 14 other people who jumped out of a plane 14,5000 feet in the air coming from Lake Wales Airport. The group was practicing “crew formations," police said.

The remaining skydivers also landed off course in nearby pastures with no reported injuries.
