A 16-year-old boy was killed in a crash on County Line Road at Ewell Road in Lakeland.

LAKELAND, Fla. — A 16-year-old boy was killed in a crash while his father was driving him to school early Friday morning.

The crash happened around 6:15 a.m. on County Line Road at Ewell Road in unincorporated Lakeland.

Deputies say a father was driving south on County Line Road taking his two sons, ages 14 and 16, to George Jenkins High School in a blue 2008 Toyota Corolla. As the man turned left onto Ewell Road, his car was hit by a burgundy 2018 Ford F150 pickup truck that was heading north on County Line Road.

The pickup truck driver had a solid green light. The Corolla driver also had a solid green light but not a green turn arrow, according to investigators.

"It was dark at the time of the crash, and the driver of the Corolla told deputies it was slightly foggy/hazy," the sheriff's office wrote.

Deputies say the 16-year-old boy was sitting with a seatbelt on in the right rear passenger side of the Corolla — where the impact from the crash happened. He was transported to Tampa General Hospital where he died from his injuries.

No one else was hurt in the crash.

The crash caused the Corolla to spin and hit a black Kia stopped in the middle lane of Ewell Road. It also caused the Ford truck to hit a Dodge Journey that was stopped in the right-turn lane of Ewell Road.

The roadways were shut down for about five hours but have since reopened. The investigation is ongoing.
