The Polk County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of one of their own after a deputy died by suicide.
Deputies responded to 32-year-old Gregory Maynard's home in Davenport on Sunday night. They found him in his bedroom with a single gunshot wound to his head.
Officials said another adult and a child were at the home, but they did not witness the incident. At this stage of the investigation, deputies believe he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a news release.
Maynard was a dual-certified deputy sheriff hired as a detention deputy in 2015 before becoming a deputy sheriff in January 2017. According to officials, he was not married and did not have any children.
“Deputy Maynard’s death is such a tragedy. Our thoughts, prayers, and support are with his family, friends, and coworkers. We are making sure Greg’s coworkers have access to both peer and professional counseling. I encourage anyone who may have feelings of self-harm to reach out for help. Florida operates an outstanding Suicide Prevention Lifeline—call or text 988 or reach out through chat by visiting 988lifeline.org/chat.” said Sheriff Grady Judd in a statement.
