WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A man riding his adult tricycle Thursday night across Winter Lake Road was hit and killed by a vehicle, and efforts are underway to identify the driver.

The crash happened around 11:20 p.m. just west of Old Eagle Lake Road and U.S. Highway 17, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say the man, 47-year-old Michael Ratton, was homeless and well-known to many people. As he was crossing the road on his pink adult tricycle, he was hit and died at the scene of the crash.

It's believed the vehicle may be commercial, however, law enforcement does not have any more identifiable information available.

There also were no apparent witnesses; Ratton was seen lying on the side of the road by a passerby, who called authorities, the sheriff's office said.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Polk County Sheriff's Office at 863-298-6200.
