POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A 27-year-old man died after losing control of his car, crashing into multiple structures, and going airborne before landing in front of a McDonald's, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
Around 1 a.m., Alphonse Vansickle, of Lake Wales, was approaching Lake Ruby Drive while driving east on Cypress Gardens Boulevard in a 2016 black Volkswagen when he lost control of the car.
Deputies said the car began to spin and then slid into a drainage ditch, hitting a drain pipe which caused the car to go airborne.
The car then hit and broke a concrete utility pole and flew another 90 feet before landing on the access road to McDonald’s.
Deputies noted that the impact on the pole caused it to be pushed approximately six inches and a part of it to snap.
Vansickle was wearing his seatbelt and his airbag deployed but he suffered significant injuries and died inside the car at the scene.
Deputies believe speeding and possible driving while intoxicated may be the reason behind the crash.
