FORT MEADE, Fla. — Polk County Fire Rescue responded to the scene where an aircraft carrying two people was found in flames on Thursday, according to a press release.
Authorities say the plane was found at 2:48 p.m. in the area of Lake Buffum Road West in Fort Meade. After the first emergency crew arrived, six additional crews came to assist.
Investigators determined that both occupants were able to get out of the aircraft. PCFR crews worked quickly to take out the fuel-fed fire with water and firefighting foam.
“Due quick thinking by the pilot, serious injuries were avoided as the aircraft crashed into an open field without endangering any structures or persons in the area,” said Fire Chief Hezedean A. Smith, D.M in a statement.
The passengers were reportedly evaluated for injuries by paramedics, but were not transported.
The press release states the Polk County Sheriff’s Office notified the FAA and NTSB.
