WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Two people were rescued from a mobile home fire in Polk County that reportedly started as a car fire but quickly spread, officials said Friday morning.
The Winter Haven Police Department said firefighters responded to what was initially called in as a house fire at the Four Lakes Golf Retirement Community. When crews got to the scene they said they saw a car "fully engulfed" in flames under a carport, with the fire "spreading into the doublewide mobile home."
Firefighters immediately started putting the fire out when they discovered two people were inside the mobile home, according to a news release. Officials said the response team worked to rescue the victims from the structure while making sure the fire didn't grow further.
The two people were rescued from the home's living room area and airlifted to a hospital, police said.
As of Friday morning, the victims were considered to be in critical, but stable, condition.
One firefighter also went to the hospital for dehydration following the incident but has since been released and "medically cleared," according to officials.
Investigators said they are working to figure out how the fire got started.
