Sheriff: Teen shot, killed by deputy in Polk County after going into 'rage' about melted chocolate on his laptop

Sheriff Grady Judd said 19-year-old Henry Maynard hit the grandmother and deputy with a car and then tried to climb into the deputy's car, leading to the shooting.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A man was killed after he was shot by a Polk County Sheriff's deputy when he rammed into the patrol vehicle and then confronted the deputy.

Sheriff Grady Judd said in a video that it started when Henry Maynard, 19, was at his grandmother's house in Winter Haven in the Oakwood Estates neighborhood. His grandmother left an Almond Joy candy bar on his laptop, which melted while he was sleeping. When he woke up and saw the melted chocolate, "he went into a rage," Judd said.

He then ran to his parents' house and got a car, which he wasn't supposed to drive because it wasn't registered and he doesn't have a license. His grandmother called his parents, who rushed over to the house, Judd said. Maynard then called 911 and told them he was about to commit a crime and hit his grandmother with the car before hitting the patrol car of the deputy who was responding to the situation.

After, he ran to the driver's side door of the deputy's car and started climbing inside the car. The deputy shot him, and Maynard died at the scene.

"He was out of control," Judd said.

Judd said Maynard was previously arrested for aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer. The sheriff said the grandmother is in the hospital with a broken arm but she's in stable condition.
