DAVENPORT, Fla. — A 34-year-old man is dead after he crashed head-on into a semi-truck Tuesday morning in Davenport, authorities say.

The crash happened at around 4:19 a.m. on U.S. 17 and 92 North, just south of the intersection with Ernie Caldwell Boulevard, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

When crews with the sheriff's office and Polk County Fire Rescue arrived at the scene, they reportedly found Luis Garcia, who is from Clay County, dead.

The driver of the semi-truck – 29-year-old Kevin Fontanez – was not hurt in the crash.

Deputies say preliminary information reveals that Garcia was driving his white Dodge Charger south on U.S. 17 and 92 North while Fontanez was going north on the same road.

As the two vehicles came close to each other, the Dodge Charger crossed into the northbound lane and struck the semi-truck head-on, the sheriff's office says.

It is still not known why Garcia crossed into the northbound lane.

Deputies say Fontanez wore his seatbelt during the crash, but Garcia did not.

The road where the incident occurred was shut down between Lem Carnes Road and Ernie Caldwell Boulevard for about five hours.

The investigation of the crash remains ongoing.
