HAINES CITY, Fla. — A woman is dead and two other people are seriously hurt after multiple cars were involved in a head-on crash Wednesday afternoon in Haines City, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

It happened around 3:45 p.m. on U.S. 27 at Morrison Ranch Road not far from Lucerne Park Road. According to the sheriff's office, 64-year-old Katrina Moore of Haines City was driving south on U.S. 27 in her Chevy Cobalt when she reportedly lost control and crossed the median into the northbound lanes before hitting a Dodge Durango head-on.

After the head-on collision, both cars hit a Kenworth truck driven by a 54-year-old Orlando man. He was not hurt, deputies said.

Moore was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car during the crash, the agency said. She died at the crash site.

The two occupants inside the Dodge, the driver 63-year-old James Chadwick of Winter Haven and 59-year-old Shari Bissell of Orlando, were seriously injured and rushed to the hospital.

For about four hours Wednesday, two southbound lanes of U.S. 27 were closed; the northbound lanes were closed a bit longer but also reopened the same day.

The sheriff's office said the crash is still under investigation.
