20-year-old drunk driver had open containers in his car when he crashed into a trooper, FHP says

The 51-year-old trooper from Lakeland suffered minor injuries.

LAKELAND, Fla. — A drunk driver with open containers in his car crashed into a state trooper overnight Monday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened just after midnight at the intersection of U.S. Highway 98 and Florida Avenue, the agency said in a news release.

Authorities say the 51-year-old trooper from Lakeland turned into the intersection while he was heading to the scene of another crash. At the same time, 20-year-old Jesus Zamora ran a red light and crashed into the passenger side of the trooper's patrol car, FHP said.

The trooper suffered minor injuries, as well as Zamora and a 25-year-old passenger in his car.

Zamora faces charges of DUI, no driver's license, possessing open containers of alcohol and running a red light.
