DAVENPORT, Fla. — A 58-year-old man faces a murder charge in connection to a deadly road rage shooting that happened over the weekend on Interstate 4 in Davenport.
Daniele Hamilton was arrested for the deadly shooting of 58-year-old Kevin Berry. Sheriff Grady Judd said during a news conference Wednesday that Hamilton shot Berry early Sunday morning near the off-ramp to U.S. Highway 27 from I-4 in Davenport.
Hamilton was charged with second-degree murder, as well as other gun charges.
It was previously reported that the investigation started around 2:15 a.m. after authorities found Berry shot near his white Dodge truck. He had been shot while exiting the highway.
Berry was rushed to a nearby hospital and was put on life support. He was taken off life support and pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m. on Tuesday.
Before the shooting, it was reported that Berry was on his way to work in Polk County, while Hamilton was on his way home from work. Both men were truck drivers, according to the sheriff.
Detectives began collecting evidence from surrounding businesses, including video footage. During the news conference, Judd said men's voices could be heard screaming at each other and gunshots in some of the footage.
This evidence led detectives to Hamliton's home. Judd said he initially denied being involved and claimed to be a witness. However, during a search of his home, detectives reportedly found spent shell casings in his bathroom trash and a .38 special revolved in his bedroom.
Reportedly, Hamilton told detectives: "You've found what you need to find, so we can go [to jail.]" The 58-year-old was taken to Polk County Jail.
"My detectives investigate every homicide as if the victim were one of their own family members — they work around the clock, without sleep, and leave no stone unturned until they solve the case," Judd said in a statement.
"I'm very proud of them, and very disappointed in this man who simply could have driven when engaged in an argument with the victim. Now, he's charged with several felonies and is facing some serious prison time."
