'Devastating' fire at Haines City home caused by lightning strike, firefighters say

While the people living at the home weren't injured, their dog died from smoke inhalation.

HAINES CITY, Fla. — A lightning strike caused a home to go up in flames Sunday afternoon in Haines City, according to a news release from the Haines City Fire Department.

The fire reportedly started around 3:30 p.m. at a home on Cattle Ranch Road. Arriving firefighters found a "severe blaze" that burned a hole through the roof, producing flames reaching 30 feet in the air, according to the department.

Crews were able to extinguish the blaze within an hour, firefighters said. While the homeowners weren't injured, they reportedly lost their dog during the fire from smoke inhalation.

At this time, crews are still investigating the damage, the department told 10 Tampa Bay.
