LAKELAND, Fla. — A single-engine plane had to make an emergency landing shortly after taking off Wednesday morning, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

A spokesperson confirmed the air tower initially lost sight of a plane on radar and contacted the authorities just after 8 a.m.

The plane landed in a field in the area of Gator Creek Ranch Road and Rockridge Road, located north of Lakeland Linder International Airport, after reportedly suffering engine failure.

Two people were reportedly on the plane at the time of the emergency landing, but they were said to be OK and didn't need medical assistance.

A sergeant with the sheriff's office on the scene said there was no apparent damage to the plane, assuming they had a "pretty good landing." Tampa International Airport authorities confirmed the plane landed safely.

The Federal Aviation Administration responded to the incident.
