POLK CITY, Fla. — One man is dead and another is seriously hurt after a near head-on crash Saturday night in Polk County.
It happened around 11:53 p.m. on North Commonwealth Avenue in Polk City, about two miles south of the Polk-Lake county border.
Investigators say a 34-year-old Orlando man was driving his 2021 Mazda CX9 northbound on Commonwealth Avenue when his car crossed the center line and hit a 49-year-old Lakeland man in a 2021 Toyota Corolla.
When deputies arrived on scene, the 49-year-old man was dead inside his car. The 34-year-old man was found with broken ribs and a fractured wrist. He was removed from his car and transported to the hospital.
According to the sheriff's office, criminal charges are possible pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
The crash caused the road to close Saturday night for about four hours.
