Pedestrian killed after being hit trying to cross a state road in Polk County, deputies say

A pedestrian was trying to cross the street in a dark area with no crosswalk and was hit and killed, deputies said.

MULBERRY, Fla. — A man was killed after he tried to cross State Road 60 in Polk County on Saturday night.

Maximino Amiltempa, 39, walked onto the road and was hit by a 59-year-old who was driving around 10 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of State Road 60 near Turner Road in Mulberry, according to deputies.

She was unable to avoid hitting him and he suffered significant injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The 59-year-old woman showed no signs of impairment and was not speeding or distracted. Deputies said it was dark during the crash and there was no crosswalk. 

The eastbound lanes were closed for three hours while deputies investigated but have since reopened.
