A Davenport man was hit and killed while trying to cross the junction of U.S. Highway 27 and Interstate 4.

DAVENPORT, Fla. — A 41-year-old man died after he was hit by an SUV Saturday evening at the U.S. Highway 27 and Interstate 4 interchange, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

The crash happened around 8:14 p.m., the agency said in a news release.

Deputies identified the man as William Sotomayor of Davenport. They say he was trying to cross U.S. 27 near or in the crosswalk when he was hit by the SUV.

Its driver was traveling north on U.S. 27 when Sotomayor began crossing the road. The driver told law enforcement he couldn’t stop immediately because it was raining and there was another car behind him.

The driver parked at a nearby gas station to speak with deputies, the sheriff's office said.

Law enforcement closed the northbound lanes of U.S. 27 for about two hours.

No one was charged for any wrongdoing, but the investigation is ongoing, the news release states.
