LAKELAND, Fla. -- Lakeland is taking a unique approach to bring affordable houses to the city.
The Community Redevelopment Agency is spending several million dollars to build an entire neighborhood along Lincoln Avenue.
They plan to build 21 of these two- and three-bedroom homes. It's part of a plan to turn around a blighted area.
“Part of stabilizing a neighborhood is homeownership and homeowners occupying that space, and so less rentals and more homeownership, and we think having 21 new residents invested in a community would definitely do it for us,” Nicole Travis of the Community Redevelopment Agency said.
The city plans to break ground on the project in the next couple of months. Some of the houses should be finished by the first half of next year.
