POLK COUNTY, Fla.—A bat from Polk County bit an employee at a Hillsborough County animal rehab center and tested positive for rabies.

A Winter Haven man found the bat at his home in early July, Polk County officials said. The bat was sent to an animal rehabilitation center in Hillsborough County where it then bit an employee.

Then bat was sent to the state lab for rabies testing, where the results came back positive, Polk County officials said.

The first Polk County case of rabies was also from a bat in Lakeland on May 31.

Polk County officials reminded residents that bats are among the mammals considered to be a high risk species or "rabies vector species,” and not to approach any animals that were acting unusual.
