ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A man was charged with DUI after he was caught driving the wrong way into three lanes of oncoming traffic, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.
It happened just before noon Monday on 1st Avenue South at Dr. M.L.K. Jr. Street South near downtown St. Pete.
Police say they spotted 49-year-old Shawn Schmidhuber driving his Honda Accord the wrong way on 1st Avenue South. They attempted to stop him but were unsuccessful.
Sgt. Michael Schade then got behind Schmidhuber's car, activated his lights and sirens and tried to pull him over. Schmidhuber reportedly kept driving.
That's when Schade decided to hit the Honda to force it off the road and away from the three lanes of oncoming cars, police said. He ultimately forced Schmidhuber's car off the road near 24th Street North. No one was injured.
Schmidhuber was arrested and charged with two counts of fleeing and eluding a police officer and one count of driving under the influence.
