ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A water main break in St. Petersburg has shut down part of a busy road. According to police, the roadway could be closed for several days.
The break happened just after 4 a.m. Wednesday on 66th Street North between Tyrone Boulevard and 25th Avenue.
An 8-inch diameter water pipe broke, spilling water on the road and leaving a large hole.
Sky 10 flew over the area, confirming a large, water-filled hole was in the roadway. The hole takes up more than one lane. There is also standing water along the roadway as well.
The northbound lanes are closed to traffic starting at 23rd Avenue North.
The southbound lanes of 66th Street remain open.
"Due to the size of water pipe break, there will be a lot of roadway restoration after the pipe is repaired," police said in a release Wednesday morning. "Therefore, we anticipate the road closure may be two days."
The exact timing of the closure isn't known right now.
The city also released information, saying in part, "The exact time for northbound lanes of 66th St. N to reopen is yet to be
determined. Commuters and residents should prepare for the road to be closed for all of Wednesday and Thursday."
The water main break did not impact any customers in the area, the city said.
The city said that parents of Tyrone Middle School students don't need to worry about the 26th Avenue N entrance to the school — it is not blocked.
Drivers in the area should use caution and should consider another route for the time being.
