LARGO, Fla. — An Apple AirTag led Largo Police to a woman who allegedly stole a man's wallet and used his credit card at Publix and other local stores.
Twanella Hill, 56, is now facing several felony charges including fraudulent use of credit cards and theft.
According to an arrest report, police met with Thomas Powell who said his wallet was stolen on Friday night after he dropped it in a local Walmart parking lot.
Powell told 10 Tampa Bay he wasn't aware he was missing his wallet until the next morning when he noticed a few charges on his bank account that he didn't make. When he checked the location of the AirTag inside his wallet, he watched in real-time his wallet making trips to different stores across town.
"It was pretty clear what was going on at that point," said Powell who also froze his cards as he saw new charges popping up. "She hit like three different stores, and it was like $1,600."
Powell called police and shared the transaction information from his credit card company as well as the locations picked up by his AirTag.
Police confirmed the transactions with the Publix manager, where the alleged thief bought pre-paid debit cards at the grocery store.
Officers identified the vehicle the thief was driving using Walmart surveillance video. It was seen leaving the store where the theft occurred. The AirTag pinged to the address of an apartment on Washington Drive where police saw the car and conducted a traffic stop, the report said.
The driver identified herself as the sister of Hill, who is being accused of stealing the wallet. The sister let police search the vehicle where they found multiple gift cards. Officers later arrested Hill after a stop at her home.
"I guess depending on your situation, I get, I get the temptation, but like, there's, there's so much surveillance, you're not likely to get away with it for long," said. Powell, who's thankful he put the AirTag in his wallet.
