Clearwater, Florida -- A 110-ton tub girder is hanging precariously over one of the busiest intersections in Pinellas County after two trucks hit it, tearing off the roofs of their trailers.
"I drive under here all the time. My truck didn't get taller, so I don't understand how we could hit it this time," said truck driver Karma Baijnauth.
The girders are part of the old US-19 overpass, which is due to be replaced. For some reason, one of the girders sagged.
The Hubbard Group is the contractor and 10 News asked a tough question. "The guys who drive these trucks say they drive through here every day and their trucks didn't get taller, so what happened?" we asked.
"We don't know right now. We are still investigating," said Hubbard Group Vice President of Communication Steve Plastek.
The intersection of US-19 and Gulf-to-Bay Blvd. is closed, causing gridlock at rush-hour, and even into the night the detours are a headache. Mike Spare is a crane operator by trade and describes the very tough task at hand.
"This is what you call a critical lift. Both cranes have to be perfectly even on both sides. If they don't lift in unison, it could fall," said Spare.
