2 rescued from house fire in St. Pete

Firefighters responded to the fire early Wednesday morning and saved a mother and daughter who were trapped in the backyard.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A mother and daughter were rescued after being trapped during a fire that engulfed their house in St. Petersburg.

Firefighters responded to the fire just after 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday on Bayside Drive South near Taylor Avenue South where they saw "intense flames" that engulfed the entire home, according to a news release.

A mother and daughter were trapped in the backyard of a bungalow behind the main house. The fire was too large and the gate was locked, so the pair could not evacuate.

Firefighters quickly found them and brought them to safety. After, they continued to try to bring the fire under control, which took over an hour.

"Firefighters faced intense heat and worked strategically to stop the fire from spreading to neighboring homes, which were already exposed to the flames. Thanks to their efforts, the fire was contained to the original structure," officials said in the release.

Pictures from St. Petersburg Fire Rescue show the roof of the house scorched with flames billowing out as firefighters work to control the fire.

There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
