ST. PETE BEACH, Fla. -- For the past 14 years, the TradeWinds Island Resort has created a giant American flag made of 975 colored towels in the sand.

The tribute to the troops and the July 4th holiday was the brainchild of retired TradeWinds employee and veteran Bob McManaway. The terry cloth towels are dyed red and blue and combined with white towels to create the display.

Hotel guests assist in placing the towels on the beach and 13 younger guests pose as the stars of the original Betsy Ross flag from 1776.

Construction of the flag started at 9 a.m. Once created, the flag stayed on the beach until 1 p.m., weather permitting.

Note: The creation of the flag is not open to the public, but anyone on the beach can take photos.
