Tarpon Springs mayor resigns, citing 'cyber-bullying' and 'constant infighting'

Vatikiotis made it clear that he was not quitting, but rather "moving on."

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. — Tarpon Springs Mayor Costa Vatikiotis resigned on Thursday in a move he said was "not spontaneous."

"I have achieved what I set out to do with several changes in City Government that will go far in preserving Tarpon Springs," he wrote, in part. "After last night's meeting, it is pointless for me to continue."

Vatikiotis went on to explain that during the meeting, commissioners were set to address a resident's "relentless cyber-bullying" of him but moved on without discussing it.

"I am also tired of the constant infighting on the Commission and the insults toward each other," he continued.

Vatikiotis made it clear that he was not quitting, but rather "moving on."

"Quitting is giving up because things are difficult, and a person does not want the effort. A person moving on with his life is being honest with himself and knows when enough is enough," the resignation letter read.

After airing his grievances, Vatikiotis said it has been an honor to serve the city of Tarpon Springs, where he plans to remain after stepping down.

"At my age, after being City Manager, Commissioner, and Mayor, I feel I have repaid my debt to my hometown. I'm done," the former mayor wrote.
