'God came through for me': Dunedin residents grateful to be alive after tornado rips through

Neighbors in a Dunedin mobile home community say they feel lucky to be alive after the tornado ripped their roofs off and sent debris flying.

DUNEDIN, Fla. — Thursday evening, there are people across Tampa Bay who aren't sleeping in their homes, as they were displaced after tornados ripped through the region overnight.

In Dunedin, neighbors at Honeymoon Mobile Home Park say they feel lucky to be alive.

"It was awful. It's a weird sound and the pressure in your ears. It was so scary!" said Sondra Martin, whose home was torn apart by the tornado early Thursday morning.

"It shook and carried the roof up. You could hear the metal of the roof; it was like they were twisting the metal," she added.

As soon as the storm passed, Sondra's concern went immediately to her neighbor Sharon Murphy, who'd taken shelter in her bathtub.

"My phone went off and I found my glasses and I said, 'Oh sh*t, it's in Dunedin!'" Murphy said.

Heavy debris from the tornado trapped Murphy inside her home, but it was nothing her loyal neighbor couldn't tackle.

"She couldn't get out, so you know how it is, I just yanked! And I got her out!" Martin explained.

"I sat there and prayed the whole time I was in the bathtub," Murphy said. "And God came through for me."

While neither Murphy nor Martin have insurance, they said they're grateful to be safe and healthy and have their community's support behind them.

Roughly 8 miles away in Oldsmar, a family on Shore Drive is also displaced tonight. A tornado ripped off their roof and threw it on their neighbor's home.

Doug Small lives a few blocks away from where that happened.

"I got the alert to my phone, then within 60 seconds it hit! It hit and it must've been 100 mile-per-hour winds!" Small said.

"A lot of big branches came down and blew out the screens. All the neighbors' garbage cans ended up in my yard! I had five garbage cans out here! Debris was everywhere and I've been out here cleaning ever since," he added.

He says he has a renewed respect for Mother Nature's power.

"Mother nature, when she's angry, she's crazy," Small joked.
